Chapter 6, The Chattanooga Shale

Though this rock unit is only a few inches to a couple of feet thick, it is the reason that the springs that define this town exist. It dates from the Devonian Period, around 400 million years old, and has been found in nearby studies to specifically date from the moments of the Frasnian-Fammenian extinction event, one of the largest extinction events in world history.
